Yeah, I'm not stupid - I understand the need for Greatest Hits packages. Whenever I hear announcements of GH albums I put my tongue in cheek and say "Gearing up for the Christmas season!" Because it seems like whenever a GH is released here, it's bang in time for Christmas.

The one thing I am quietly amused about is a little hypocrisy - those who swear and declare it's "ridiculous" and a "money making scam by the record company" when an artist of only a few albums under their career belt puts out a GH (Britney Spears is a good example).

LOL, the first thing my SG loving hubby said when I told him was "A greatest hits?! They only did 2 albums!"

Still, can't go past the excellent cross promo it'll give Darren.

Let's hope 3rd time's a charm!

Well............... I guess that I'm going to sound like a wet rag here, but I'm not sure how much of a boost Darren will get from this.

First off, in the US, I suspect the SG ship has sailed and I'm not at all confident that enough fans outside the existing base will care. UNLESS they have a nifty tie-in planned. That could change things.

Although, I suspect it'll sell in Australia because SG still has their popularity there. And perhaps in a couple of other countries. But over all? Sorry ...........

Secondly, I'm not sure that re-associating Darren with songs like Knew I Loved You and Truly is smart. Yes, those are his hits and I hope that he's proud of them. But he says that he's worked very hard to shed that poppy image. So let's say that I'm wrong and that the greatest hits cd DOES reconnect with fans or that it brings in new people. What 'Darren' are they going to expect???? They could be coming for Chica-cherry-cola or Knew I Loved You and find Void 'Darren' waiting at the end.

Finally, I can't let this remain unsaid .......... Deb is one of the most loyal and caring people that I've met online. She may rub some of you the wrong way, and I fully respect that you may not like her. But the Deb that I know is a wonderful person.

I don't know this for sure but I think it has to do with who owns the publishing rights to the music. For example, I believe that is what Michael Jackson bought out from under Paul McCartney...the Beatles publishing rights. The Beatles never owned their own publishing rights and I believe that was how Beatles songs started appearing in commercials...I think the owner of the publishing rights had the say.

I could be wrong and I don't have a SG cd handy to look at it but I think D & D do own their publishing rights. I believe Darren's publishing company is Rough Cut Music Publishing....which I could be wrong but I think that is his company. If you look at the Spin credits, when Greg Bieck wrote with D, Bieck Music Publishing is listed; when Walter A writes with him, it is Sony/ATV Tunes LLC/Wallyworld Musc. Seems like Walter A maybe shares publishing rights since 3 are listed. On TTATS when it is Robert, Specific Music is listed.

It appears to me that artists tend to retain their publishing rights now which is what helps them keep some control I think. In the days of the Beatles, they always signed their publishing rights over to the labels. I remember reading the Bee Gees comment on this. They don't own the publishing rights to their very early material but along the way did start retaining their publishing rights and they commented that it was key to retaining control of their music.

Having said that, it might be possible that they have contractually licensed Sony the right to a greatest hits and therefore it might be possible that they don't have a say at this point. But...just as possible that D & D both agreed to it at this point in time.

You might be right Dyan because his music has changed and he is not the same as he was when TMD & IKILY were big.

But on the other hand...TMD continues to receive a lot of airplay. My stations have actually started playing SG again when they wouldn't touch it for years. And it will be almost 9 years ago when TMD was on the charts....its as if the cycle might have turned as it always does. It might work and I'm not sure there is a significant downside to it. While Void for example definately had some very strange noise at the beginning...overall I don't think it is necessarily that far a stretch for those that liked SG to leap to TTATS. But of course, I still believe had some of TTATS been heard, it could have worked on radio...not Void...but there were several songs that I thought could have actually had radio potential.

I dont think the release of the SG GH could harm Darren because hes really at the bottom of the ladder at the moment. Unless the SG GH revives all things SG and sells like hotcakes to the masses and Darrens solo tanks again sales wise. [img]confused.gif[/img]

I bet this new album does have a mega ballady type on it so people will relate it if they hear truly for the first time.

I think Dublin sky would of made an awesome single from TTATS its a shame it didnt get to that.

I think the GH's is just what record companies do.. and like Biscuit said they are quite often released to cash in on the xmas time market. Maybe it was decided that since the record company were doing it regardless that it would be a good idea to put Darren single on it so at least there was somewhere to be led to from it.

Will anyone here actually buy this SG Greatest Hits album? I know it'll have D's new single on it but then so will his solo album and I presume that it'll also be available as a stand-alone track, possibly with 1 or 2 B-sides.

I think that I'd maybe only consider buying the GH album if it contained a few of the lesser known tracks. I dunno......
